The Giants on Social Media

The internet’s sole purpose before was for communication and synchronicity in a workplace, nothing else. Who would blame them anyway when internet was only available to a handful of people who mostly thrives on the class A and B of the social demographics of the world? Internet was simply conventional that time.

The onset of social media gradually turned the situation upside down. Today, companies, big or small, are flocking to the social media to make their presence felt. Small wonder though because social media has a teeming number of one billion users worldwide! Of course, as the premiere internet marketing company in the Philippines, social media is another slice of pie to make a company’s presence felt. According to the study, 23% of the Fortune 500 companies have a blog, a number that is fairly climbing.

Is URL everything?

The time blogging became famous is the time onomamania was set loose. For those who aren’t aware, onomamania is a madness (or to put it more mildly, fascination) for names. It is the ultimate challenge and temptation for every bloggers out there whether they should change their URL blog or not.

Since the establishment of this blog, I personally considered changing my URL many times before. Like other bloggers and SEO outsourcing people, as I go along writing entries, a name or a phrase of words would just come out of nowhere. These names and phrases of words would entice us, sounding amazingly good, to change the URL. I even thought that maybe, naming my blog over me is cool and decent. As years go by, I am extremely pleased that I never did that. (The reason? This is not my personal blog. This is my professional blog where I post entries related to the fiend I am currently into.

However, what bloggers are probably anxious at is the consequences behind this sudden change. Two examples are as below:

  1. Will it affect my current blog traffic?

Whether you blog at your personal expense or a blogger paid to introduce a certain product, there is something very comforting on receiving high blog traffic. The higher your traffic is, the more visitors you have. As an anxious blogger, which I assume there is aplenty, attempting to change the blog URL accompanies a concern of losing the current traffic. Though there are no equations proving this decision to be ill, changing a URL can also bring no positive effect. Search engines rank pages based on the keywords that a website has. Unless you are planning to do some major shake-over that will affect your keywords, there is little a new URL can offer but self-satisfaction

  1. Will I lose some of my loyal readers/followers?

Though both of the two questions appear to be genuinely similar, I assure you, they are not. Followers refer to your readers who even interact on your site by liking or commenting on a blog entry. Though followers can also generate blog traffic, blog traffic encompasses a broader audience that went to your site. Called as the visitors, these people are often generated by search engines sent to your blog site through their search inquiry. Most often than not, these visitors would browse on your site and leave after fulfilling the inquiry that sent them theirs.

Theoretically, you won’t lose any followers if you were to change your URL. Remember that readers browse your site for the content, not for the whatsoever reason. A change in URL can even benefit the author especially if the new URL can be remembered easily.

I’ve discussed many times before the importance of blogging for an online company and what it can generate when it is well-taken care of. To give a feisty gist, blogging enables you to communicate with your clients personally thus increasing the chances of them engaging business transactions. However, what I failed to mention are the things that you have to consider before blogging. The highlighted words above signify the “why” of blogging in correlation to an online company. Having noticed my own flaw, I will, on this entry, list the “what” of blogging in correlation to blogging itself.

Taking your dog for a walk is very similar to blogging. You might have woken up one morning and decided to take your dog outside. Sudden and unwanted flashes are also similar to bloggers who have no dreams of being a blogger. An idea just came to them, as simple as that. Having taken your breakfast, you cannot just leash your dog and start the marathon outside. You have to evaluate the weather, your other commitments, your condition and of course, your dog. Whether you’re feeling very energetic about running, you have to be rational by considering many other factors. Same rules actually apply to blogging. A sudden flush of itch to blog won’t make your blogs successful. As much as rereading and proofreading your words re important in our business, so is the decision weighing if blogging is really a smart idea.

Mistake me not, blogging is an excellent idea. One simply needs a couple of stuffed stuff in his/her head and everything is now ready to go.

  1. Your target audience

Before you hand-rape your mouse and keyboard, you must first understand that not all literally works will encompass the whole world. It would be very vague and generic if your main purpose is write blog entries catering everyone let alone be successful. Even the most read book, The Bible, finds trouble in terms of readership because of spiritual faction.

First and foremost, learn, define and understand the audience you’re writing to. Yes, people on all walks of life may come and visit your blog but that doesn’t make closer to success. In Philippine SEO, it is better to have a higher Average Visit Duration (the amount of time that readers spend on your site) than the Bounce Rate (the percentage of readers leaving your site without interaction).

  1. Do not despair

If you’re a socialite seeking to brush boredom away through blogging, audience will be aplenty. Personal bearings on social media can have a dramatic impact in a blog site. If, however, you are a businessman, employee, or a regular Joe aiming to promote your business through blogging, the ascent could be very slow. For the first few months, or even years, audience will come bits by bits. A very typical scenario.

  1. Be good with it

Face it: you can’t expect thousands of readers every week without honing your craft to perfection. Harsh as it may sound, this third item is the only item that separates the thin line between spammers and bloggers. Without coherence, purpose, and details, a blog site can easily be mistaken as a spam, theoretically speaking, in the internet.

Luckily, the beauty of blogging allows a starting blogger to grow and bloom. This activity actually does not differ from any other stuff out there; all it needs is a little passion and real interest. Read some blogs and be inspired. There is no shame on trying other blogger’s style and adapting to yours.
